Don't let the music die inside of you! You must invest it into the next generation, the next leader, - as church leaders we must be skilful in passing on the baton and keeping the music alive

I am sitting in a fantastic theater, listening to arguably 3 of the best childrens choirs in the nation. My daughter is in one of those choirs and as they sing, I am mesmerized by the sound, the melody and the unison found in the music produced by a crowd of people.

As I and the rest of the audience sat in sheer amazement and delight as harmonious note after note filled that air, we became caught up in that moment, in the music. It was right at this moment that God pointed out a person with their back to the audience, a person facing that ‘crowd of people’… the conductor.

Here was a person totally immersed in creating music by unifying a ‘crowd of people’ to a common cause, a person who

Inspire, mentor and disciple

dared to believe in the crowd, who saw their potential. This person who, with passion and conviction, spurred the ‘crowd of people’ to performance excellence.

This person didn’t directly receive the accolades of performing, they didn’t even face the audience. However, they were able to see far more and experience far more than the audience. They were present at the start, when the ‘crowd of people’ came on board, working with them, positioning them, mentoring them, imparting to them, passing on the baton and sharing the love of music. Then to top it all off, they get the best seat in the house as the ‘crowd of people’ performs.

Music is an amazing gift, and as a genre, choral performance can give you a sine-tingling and emotive charged moment that leaves you awe-inspired. It is now very easy to compare and look at the parallel between the Five Fold Ministry and the conductor. Some see the role of the Five Fold Ministry akin to that of front man or lead singer of a band – facing the audience and sharing the message that way and getting the audience talking.

However, I think there is much to be learned from the humble conductor. First of all, you are there at the start with the ‘crowd of people’, you unite them, see their talents and potential. You work with them, positioning them, mentoring them, imparting to them, passing on the baton and sharing the love.

Then as they reach out to their audience, the world, with their gifts and talents, there you are in the best seat of the house taking in the spine-tingling performance – seeing more than the audience, you recall the hard work, the tough times, those precious moments shared and the funny things that occurred along the way. All of the sudden, this performance is the collaboration and the fruit of your effort and their effort combined.

You see them take newer performers under their wings, they see the potential, they share the message, working with their new protogees, positioning them, passing on the baton. And before long, your ‘crowd of people’ is a crowd of experts and conductors who share a common experience and passion and vision and skill, and the love of music.

They may not enter full time ministry, or the Five Fold Ministry may not even be a consideration for them – they do it for the love of it and they are effective in their sphere of influence, in their position within the choir and what they bring to the performance.

Don’t always look for the flashy lights dancing over the audience with you as the front man. Instead, invest into your ‘crowd of people’, invest into their lives.

As a conductor, you see the performance far before they ever set foot on stage (potential), you invest into them and in turn invest into that potential. And whats more, you get the best seat in the house as they go to the world and make disciples – better than one off concerts one would think.

Don’t let the music die inside of you

George Foreman, one of a handful of legendary Boxing Champs to successfully come out of retirement and regain the Heavy Weight Championship of the World. This was achieved after 10 years in retirement. What set George apart from many Champs to be drawn out of retirement, was his drive, preparation and principles. It is there same elements that have made him a force to be reckoned with in sales and business. Is this all hype? Am I talking it up? No Way! George Foreman has proven himself time and time again. The George Foreman Lean, Mean, Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine is the best-selling electrical appliance in history. Wikipedia states, “In 1994, Foreman once again sought to challenge for the world championship after Michael Moorer had beaten Holyfield for the IBF and WBA titles. In an instant, Foreman had regained the title he had lost to Muhammad Ali two decades before. He went back to his corner and knelt in prayer as the arena erupted in cheers. With this historic victory, Foreman broke three records: he became, at age 45, the oldest fighter ever to win the world heavyweight crown; and, 20 years after losing his title for the first time, he broke the record for the fighter with the longest interval between his first and second world championships. The age spread of 19 years between the champion and challenger was also the largest of any heavyweight boxing championship fight.”

Knockout Entrepreneur - Read Why George Foreman is the Heavyweight Champ in Business

Knockout Entrepreneur weaves the success Foreman has tasted in the ring, the success he has enjoyed in business, with his life principles and faith. It is the life principles and faith that have seen him rise to the top again and again. He values success, not purely monetary success, but in all fields and aspects of life. Success is built upon hard work, integrity and belief. Throughout Knockout Entrepreneur, Foreman talks about having the right people in your corner, holding onto your integrity and reputation, working hard and seeing opportunity and potential. This book has been a great read, with its analogies, and easy to read enjoyability, I think this is a great book for any entrepreneur, sales person or leader to have in their library. It’s not about complex formulas and 16 step approaches, it is about standing strong, preparing well and doing the work. Fantastic read.
